Topic for Sunday, Sept 19th: Polytheism: Do we all do it?
“Polytheism, the belief in many gods. Polytheism characterizes virtually all religions other than Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, which share a common tradition of monotheism, the belief in one God.”
If you are a monotheist or an atheist you would deny it, but even today, we “pray” to the rain gods for rain, have superstitions and basically look to many sources of luck for our daily lives. Even if we are a thoughtful, intelligent people, we believe that we have many sources of “luck” and for our success. If we do not pray to Mary, we pray to Ganesh and/or to Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion, among the other gods we are taught to revere. Who do you pray to?
This will be a discussion of polytheism and how it still has a strong influence in the world of today. Newcomers welcome to join us!
