What’s In our Name? Should we change the name of our church?
Thomas Jefferson was a significant historical figure in the founding of our nation, but some church members consider his abusive slave treatment and his belief that blacks were a sub-species as the subject of debate on whether we should continue to share his name today.
Due to recent racial activities in our community, historical speakers who presented factual information about Thomas Jefferson, as well as our recent book discussion on “White Fragility”, TJ members have expressed the need to now submit more written opinions regarding the pros or cons of changing or keeping our name. This name change is both an intellectual and an emotional decision, and we invite your individual views.
TJ members will vote on our Name Change on Sunday, July 12th.
Members who wish to contribute new pros or cons on whether TJ should change its name are invited to submit written opinions -deadline June 19th.
Note: All previous written submissions may be reviewed on our website: https://www.allpeoplesuu.com/whats-in-our-name/
