I hope this finds you well. The Salaam Network is organizing an exciting series of presentations by UU Ministers knowledgeable about Islam in the time-period between January and May 2022. As you know, in our last meeting on January 19, we heard from Rev. Dr. Susan Ritchie, and had a stimulating discussion on the early history of Unitarianism. It gives me great pleasure to announce that on February 9, 2022, our Distinguished Guest Speaker will be Rev. Justin Osterman. He has studied Islam his entire adult life. He learned Arabic at the Defense Language Institute and served as a US Army interpreter in Egypt. He earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Meadville Lombard Theological School, was ordained, and served congregations for 20 years. He visited Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 2005 where he interpreted for US attorneys representing prisoners. He founded Breaking the Surface™ in 2021 as an on-line platform to share life lessons drawn from his decades as a recreational SCUBA diver and minister, with the goal of equipping people to lead deeper, richer, more meaningful lives outside the framework of institutional religion.
Rev. Osterman’s sermon entitled “Back to the Future” is attached as your Reading for the meeting. The title of his presentation is “Reclaiming the Core of Islam: How Myth, Misunderstanding, and Disinformation Prevent Bridge Building to Peace in the 21st Century” Please feel free to invite your friends to hear the presentation and participate in the discussion.
